Large evergreen shrub or small broadly columnar tree. Oval, wavy-edged leaves up to 4cm long, conspicuously variegated when young with a central greenish yellow-green blotch, then fading to green with age. Small sweetly scented, very dark purple flowers in spring.

Dislikes wet soil and cold winds, so best given some protection unless grown in a mild climate. May make new growth if cut back by frost.

Can be used for hedging in mild locations.
