description:
Large evergreen shrub or small broadly columnar tree. Oval, wavy-edged leaves up to 4cm long, conspicuously variegated when young with a central greenish yellow-green blotch, then fading to green with age. Small sweetly scented, very dark purple flowers in spring.

cultivation:
Dislikes wet soil and cold winds, so best given some protection unless grown in a mild climate. May make new growth if cut back by frost.

usage:
Can be used for hedging in mild locations.
