Dwarf alpine forming compact mounds of small leaves. Masses of fairly large, almost stemless mauve flowers with white eyes in early spring.

Moist, very well drained, moderately fertile gritty soil, preferably alkaline. Best in part shade. Protect from excessive winter wet. Usually grown in an alpine house or may planted in rock crevices.
