Clump-forming, rhizomatous perennial, usually deciduous, sometimes semi-evergreen. Lance shaped, plain, unspotted, green leaves, up to 40cm long. Rich blue flowers borne on erect stems throughout spring.

Moist, well drained, fertile soil. Best in part shade.
Cut back to ground level in autumn. Divide in spring or autumn. Mulch in autumn and spring. Can be prone to mildew if they become too dry.
