Vigorous clump-forming, rhizomatous deciduous perennial with elliptical, softly hairy, unspotted, plain green leaves up to 45cm long. Rich blue sometimes tinged with pink and fading to purplish-blue, late winter to mid-spring.

Moist, well drained, fertile soil. Best in part shade.
Cut back to ground level in autumn. Divide in spring or autumn. Mulch in autumn and spring. Can be prone to mildew if they become too dry.
