Small to medium sized deciduous tree, smaller than the common pear, with thorny purplish tinted twigs. Ovate, finely toothed, glossy leaves. White, sometimes pink-tinged, flowers in spring, followed by small, inedible fruits. Rarely sets viable seed but spreads by freely produced suckers.

Best in moist, well-drained loam and full sun. Grows well in heavy clay, reluctant to fruit in shade.

By seed, when produced, or separation of rooted suckers.

Hedgerow tree

other notes:
Fairly rare in the wild, with a sporadic distribution in Western Europe, including parts of France, particularly Brittany, North West Spain and South West Britain. Usually found in mixed woodland and hedgerows.
