Imposing small tree or large shrub with attractive large leathery, glossy dark green leaves, silvery white or buff underneath, up to 30cm long. Makes a dramatic show in spring with dense rounded trusses of bell-shaped, cream flowers with a purple basal blotch inside, opening from pink buds.
Needs a sheltered woodland position with moist lime-free soil in a mild location.
Architectural specimen for large woodland gardens.
From Eastern Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan. Introduced by Sir Joseph Hooker in 1850.
