Adaptable, tough tree tolerant of drought and pollution. Spiny shoots and pinnate leaves with small round leaflets. Rugged, deeply fissured bark. Often suckers. Slightly fragrant, creamy-white pea-like flowers are produced in drooping clusters from late spring.
Best in fertile moist, well drained soil but tolerant of poor soils and periods of drought. Dislikes very wet or waterlogged conditions.
Can be pruned if required, preferably in autumn.
Commonly planted in urban areas.
Native to the eastern USA but inow naturalised in many parts of Europe. Introduced to France in 1601.
