Summer-flowering bulb producing large spherical heads of tiny bright red flowers with golden anthers. May be followed by red berries in suitable conditions. Large paddle-shaped, wavy-edged leaves up to 70cm long clasp the fleshy stem. Generally larger and taller than the species.
Well drained, humus rich soil in sun or part shade. Best in a warm position. Keep on the dry side in winter. The bulb will survive a few degrees of frost for short periods but in cold areas is better lifted or grown in a pot and given winter protection.
