Tender perennial that produces very strange looking flowerheads with wing-like bracts, sombre, almost black, dark brownish-purple with long whisker-like filaments. Attractive foliage of large paddle-shaped olive-green leaves.
Needs warm humid conditions and dappled shade with good air circulation. Free draining, but moisture retentative, humus-rich soil, preferably on the acid side.
In temperate areas it is normally grown under glass in large containers.
