Half-hardy annual, compact and bushy habit with deeply cut, toothed, pinnate leaves which are pungently aromatic when bruised. Yellow, orange or red flowerheads. There are many excellent named cultivars.
Needs full sun and moderately fertile well drained soil. Will grow in both clay and sandy soils.
From seed which usually germinates within 2 weeks. Sow in March in a greenhouse.
Supposed to repel insects and used in companion planting with vegetable crops such as potatoes and tomatoes.
Used as a food flavouring and colouring. Also used as a medicinal herb and in perfumery.
