Large, tall growing broad-headed tree. Rounded to broadly ovate, deep green leaves, paler and hairy underneath. Leaves turn yellow in autumn. Pendant cymes of pale yellow flowers in summer, followed by winged fruits.
Any reasonably fertile, moist, well drained soil, preferably neutral to alkaline, in sun or part shade. Reaches about 8m. in 10 years.
May be hard pruned if required, in winter or early spring.
Good for shelterbelts.
The flowers are used to make Linden Tea, a pleasant drink highly valued for its medicinal benifits. Very popular in France where it is known as tilleul.
