Spreading rhizomatous perennial with very large, coarse-textured, hairy green leaves. Spikes of Borage-like starry blue flowers in spring.
Any moist, humus-rich, fertile soil in sun or shade. Robust grower and will tolerate a certain amount of dryness once established and will therefore often succeed in dry shade.

The cooked young stems, leaves and rhizomes are eaten as a vegitable in Turkey.
From the Balkans, Turkey and the Caucasus. Naturalised in some parts of Britain.
