Unusual large shrub or small bushy tree with neatly arranged, alternate, leathery leaves, New growth is reddish bronze. Erect racemes of small pale green flowers in late spring.
Moist, well drained, lime-free soil in sun or part shade with protection from strong winds.
Good, interesting foliage.
Native to Japan, southern Korea and Taiwan. Rare in cultivation.

Botanically curious because the flowers exhibit "cryptic dioecy", that is whilst they are functionally perfect, individual trees are either strictly protandrous, releasing pollen before stigmas are receptive, or protogynous, stigmas receptive before the anthers release pollen.
