Large, conical, evergreen tree which often forms several main stems. Deeply furrowed, purplish grey-brown bark. Linear, finely toothed, mid-green leaves, silvery underneath, about 2cm long. They are arranged in two ranks along the shoots but with a few additional very short leaves on the top of the stems, lying flattened with their silvery sides uppermost. Small greenish yellow male flowers and small ovoid cones up to 2.5cm long, green ripening to brown.
Likes a moist, preferably acid soil in sun or shade. Reaches about 5 metres in 10 years.
Good large specimen tree.
A major forestry tree, with the timber used for construction purposes etc. The bark is used for tanning and dying.
