Vigorous, rhizomatous marginal aquatic. Tall strap-shaped leaves. Characteristic dark brown flower spikes (spadix). in which the tiny male flowers are positioned above the female ones but usually with no apparent join between the sections.
Shallow water or mud at the edges of ponds, lakes, canal and other slow-moving water. Normally grows in freshwater but tolerates slightly brackish marshes.
Easy to grow and fast, but can be invasive.
By seed or division of rhizomes.
The leaves have often been used for thatching.
The fleshy rhizomes are edible.
Widespread global distribution. Native and common to Northern Europe, including Britain.
