Although adaptable to most soils, it is particularly suited to sandy acid soil.
Resistant to strong winds and makes an effective low windbreak. The roots are good for stabilising soil and in common with the rest of its family, fixes nitrogen..
Flowers are attractive to bees.
The seeds are poisonous.
