description:
Vigorous large deciduous shrub with broadly ovate, finely toothed, greyish green leaves which are tomentose underneath. Foliage sometimes turns dark red in autumn. Creamy white, fragrant flowers in early summer, followed by clusters of ovoid red berries which ripen to black and usually remain into winter.

cultivation:
Any reasonably well drained soil in sun or part shade. Will tolerate dry conditions.
If required, prune back shoots after flowering.

usage:
Good hedgerow plant.

other notes:
Widely distributed in the wild, from North Africa and Europe to South West Asia. Native to Britain, it is a common hedgerow plant of the chalk downs.
