Twining deciduous climber with pinnate leaves. Numerous short clusters of fragrant, deep purple flowers in late spring and early summer. Often repeat flowers later in the year. Shorter growing and less rampant than the oriental species, also later flowering.

Moist, well drained soil in a sunny position. Over-rich soil may reduce flowering.
Plants may not flower until fully established, which can take five years.
Prune shoots back to 4 buds in late winter, before new growth begins.

By grafting.
