Beautiful tree or large shrub with fine feathery deep green pinnate foliage. Erect panicles of white flowers in May. As they open and age, the centres change colour from greenish, through yellow and pink to deep carmine red. Black ellipsoid fruits containing an edible nut.
Well drained soil in full sun and warm position. Likes alkaline soils. Hardy but can be damaged by late spring frosts. Can be trained against a south-facing wall.
The nuts are usually roasted and are similar to macadamia.
Native to Northern China.
Unusual in cultivation, deserves to be more widely planted.
