Large narrowly sword-shaped green to blue-green leaves, which can be up to 1.2m, and are not as sharply spiny as most Yuccas. long. Develops a tall rough textured trunk, often thicked at the base. Often multi-stemmed and ultimately large and tree-like, but may be restricted in size when container grown. White flowers in spring.
Best on well drained, gritty, reasonably fertile soil, with regular watering in summer. Full sun or part shade in a warm location. Will tolerate poor and alkaline soils and drought. Dislikes wet winter conditions, keep container grown plants on the dry side. Borderline frost hardy, but foliage may be damaged by low temperatures.
From seed, stem cutting or by separation of basal suckers.
Very popular as a house plant.
Good architectural specimen for tropical and sub-tropical gardens.
