Tough, exposure resistant shrub of sandy and rocky coastal areas in mild climates. Branching woody stems carry cylindrical, fleshy leaves which are green when young, turning yellowish as they age. Some plants also exhibit purplish foliage, most especially in very exposed, sunny locations. Insignificant pinkish flowers and more noticeable orange coloured fleshy rounded fruit.

Grows near the sea on sand and rocky soils in full sun. Thrives in salty conditions (halophyte). Drought tolerant. Dificult to cultivate due to its very specific environmental requirements.
